ENEA participates in the Project ABBaCo "Pilot experiments for the environmental restoration and balneability of the Bagnoli-Coroglio coastal area" funded by MIUR. The great project aims at the remediation and environmental restoration of the area and its restitution to the community.

The ABBaCo Project, co-ordinated by the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn and in collaboration with other Campanian and Italian outstanding research groups, aims at identifying and experimenting innovative actions for the environmental restoration of the coastal are of Bagnoli-Coroglio, were a former industrial plant caused a heavy and widespread contamination of both land and sea in the area.
Starting from the assessment of the environmental conditions of the pre-industrialization period and carrying out the characterization of the present state of contamination through chemical-physical analysis of sediments, bioaccumulation and ecotoxicological tests, the reclamation process of the area and its environmental restoration will be designed.
In particular, ENEA is engaged in carrying out the chemical analyses that will contribute to define the present contamination, but also to evaluate its evolution over time by geocronology studies and the dynamic reconstruction of sedimentation.
Ad hoc solutions, such as posidonia replanting, and new environmental technologies, such as bioremediation and bioaugmentation will be studied for the environmental restoration of the area.
The operations will be accompanied by a continuous check of the decontamination, recovery and restoration actions and the success of the ecological and functional recovery of the area.
