Abstract | The hydrothermal stability of Y-TZP zirconia was investigated at 37°C in a NaCl solution by evaluating the kinetics of the phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic structure, which is the cause of observed strength degradation in zirconia materials. The amount of transformed phase was in the order of 5-6 mol% after 1-y aging. Rectification of the surface samples was effective in reducing the transformation rate. Surface transitory hardening observed during the incubation period before the starting of the phase transformation process was related to the initial chemical interaction taking place between water and zirconia. |
